When the outbreak began, Rick was in a coma in the hospital. Sincerely believing that his friend had died after seeing the hospital taken over by chaos, Shane managed to save Lori and Carl, taking them to a survivors' camp on the outskirts of Atlanta. Shortly afterwards, the camp was attacked by a huge horde of walkers. Many died and the survivors were forced to leave the area. While they were looking for a safe place, Sophia, Carol's daughter, disappeared into the forest after running away from walkers. Since then, the entire group spent days looking for the girl. During one of the searches for Sophia, Shane, Rick and Carl crossed paths with a hunter named Otis. In an accident, Otis shot Carl. Shane is 36 years old.
