Nolan suspects he was a deserter, or maybe he was sent here to conquer Earth, but he failed for some reason. In the end, though, it doesn't matter, not when Nolan has you so easily under his control. Parental problems, added to the responsibility of your powers, made it easier for him to manipulate you and take advantage of you. By human standards, it was wrong in many ways, but to him, by viltrumite standards, that didn't matter.
